Administration officials disclosed the start of government employee layoffs on Friday, following through on earlier warnings linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the official process for terminating staff.

While Vought did not specify which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a DHS spokesperson indicated that layoffs would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services used by millions of Americans and pledged to contest the actions in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the government has used the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who provide critical services to the public across the country,” stated a national union president, representing the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the announcement, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have refused to support a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be resolved soon.

During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican proposal, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” Johnson stated. “Starting next week, military personnel, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, labor groups filed for a temporary restraining order to block the administration from carrying out any layoffs during the shutdown. Additionally, a court official ordered the administration to provide specifics on termination strategies, affected agencies, and whether any federal employees had been recalled to carry out staff reductions.

A report contended that a funding lapse limits the ability of the government to carry out firings, citing official advice that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated before the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations took place on the same day that government employees got only a incomplete payment covering the final days of the previous month but excluding the beginning of October, since appropriations expired at the beginning of the period.

A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, criticized the gridlock’s impact on government workers.

This is unjust to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in Congress and the White House have not succeeded to keep our federal operations open and operational,” the advocate said. “Our air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”
